“My mother would never optionally put that film on. She does not like watching herself,” Threapleton, 24, told ‘Defined’ magazine

Mia Threapleton may be Kate Winslet’s daughter, but growing up as the child of the A-list actress comes with a surprising twist: she’s never seen Titanic in full.
While speaking with Defined magazine about her own starring role in Wes Anderson’s new movie The Phoenician Scheme, Threapleton, 24, admitted that she has never watched the entirety of the 1997 film that helped turn both her mother, Winslet, 49, and costar Leonardo DiCaprio from working actors into Hollywood superstars.
“I remember the car scene happening and these hands appeared from behind my head and covered up my eyes,” Threapleton said, recalling that her mother blocked her from watching her famous sex scene with DiCaprio, now 50, aboard the RMS Titanic on its maiden and final voyage. “I was like, ‘I can still hear everything!’ ”
“I don’t remember why it was on,” Threapleton added of the movie. “My mother would never optionally put that film on. She does not like watching herself. And I totally understand why.”

Winslet shares her daughter Mia with ex-husband Jim Threapleton, whom she divorced in 2001. The Oscar winner also shares son Joe Alfie Mendes, 21, with ex Sam Mendes, whom she was married to from 2003 to 2010, and youngest son Bear, 11, whom she shares with husband Edward Abel Smith.
While Mia has never seen Titanic in full, Winslet told E! News in September 2024 that her son Bear had just seen the movie for the first time the year prior and said Bear “cried a lot, and he kept having to pause it, and he was very upset,” during the film. At the time, Winslet noted that her 2004 movie Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind is “a big favorite” for her older children, including Mia.

Mia has been acting in movies and television herself since her onscreen debut in 2014’s A Little Chaos; she and Winslet even costarred in a 2022 episode of the U.K. series I Am as a mother-daughter duo.
The Phoenician Scheme marks Mia’s largest role to date, and while Mia spoke with Defined, she said that acting professionally “was not something that was ever impressed upon me” by her mother while growing up.
“To me, it feels the equivalent of a lawyer bringing their child into a courtroom,” she said of why Winslet never brought her to her film sets as a kid. “As I’ve grown up, actually, the more grateful I am that it has happened the way it happened because it has meant that all of my experiences and all of the things that I’ve done have all been from me. They’ve all been things that I wanted and that I put in work to do. That was something that [Winslet] was actually really, really supportive of me doing because that is exactly what happened to her.”
The Phoenician Scheme is in theaters May 30.
