Truman appears briefly near the beginning of the film, which is in theaters now

WARNING: Spoilers for The Phoenician Scheme below.
Truman Hanks has a surprise — and shockingly gory! — cameo in Wes Anderson’s newest film, The Phoenician Scheme.
Led by Benicio del Toro with a supporting cast that includes Truman’s dad Tom Hanks, the black-comedy caper opens with Truman, 29, playing the role of “Administrative Secretary” to del Toro’s Zsa-zsa Korda, as the two are on board an airplane attempting to evade the latest attack on notorious business-empire owner Korda.
But before they can ground safely, Truman’s terrified character is dismembered from the waist up, as part of the plane next to his seat explodes — effectively leaving both an unwelcome opening in the aircraft and a job opening in Korda’s roster.

Aside from Truman, Tom, 68, and del Toro, 58, The Phoenician Scheme also features a star-studded cast of Michael Cera, Riz Ahmed, Bryan Cranston, Mathieu Amalric, Richard Ayoade, Jeffrey Wright, Scarlett Johansson, Benedict Cumberbatch, Rupert Friend and Hope Davis, among others.
Del Toro leads as a rich European man named Zsa-zsa Korda, who is described as an international “maverick in the fields of armaments and aviation.”
After his presumed eventual death, Korda plans to leave his wealth and affairs to his estranged only daughter: nun-in-training Sister Liesl (played by Mia Threapleton in her first starring film role).
Tom, meanwhile, appears early in the film as Leland, a business associate of Korda alongside his partner Reagan (Cranston, 69), who shoot hoops in a game of H-O-R-S-E against Korda and Prince Farouk (Ahmed, 42) in one memorable scene.

While Truman isn’t primarily an actor, he has worked on the production teams of movies like West Side Story (2021) and Black Widow (2021), plus TV series including Atypical and Fallout.
He also previously appeared as an actor alongside dad Tom, with small parts in Anderson’s Asteroid City (2023), as well as 2022’s A Man Called Otto from director Marc Forster, as a younger version of Tom’s titular crotchety character.

During a post-screening Q&A for A Man Called Otto in January 2023, Tom told PEOPLE what it was like working with his youngest child, whom he shares with wife Rita Wilson.
“Without a doubt, it’s special because, you know, I changed his diapers,” said the two-time Academy Award winner. “But you get past that right away because you gotta show up, and you gotta hit the marks, and you gotta do it on time, and you gotta be right there.”
Tom continued of Truman, “I know what that takes, and he does too. It’s a little different when it’s the whole shebang. He was cast for a very specific reason. We resemble each other, he’s not a stranger, and he knows what the pressure is, and he’s gotta do it.”
The Phoenician Scheme is in theaters now.
