Thicke married April Love Geary in Mexico on May 30, with the “You Make Me Wanna” singer by his side

Robin Thicke is sharing how Usher stepped up and saved the day at his Mexico wedding last month.
While chatting with PEOPLE on the red carpet at the 2025 BET Awards on Monday, June 9, the “Blurred Lines” singer revealed that one of his groomsmen fell ill with COVID at the last minute and was unable to attend the wedding. But he knew he had the perfect man to take over the job.
“Usher was already coming to the wedding, and I was like, ‘Hey buddy, you mind filling in?’ ” recalls Thicke, who was joined on the carpet by his new wife, April Love Geary.
“I didn’t want to ask him originally, even though he’s closer to me than some of the other groomsmen,” he continues of Usher, whom he’s been friends with for more than 20 years. “But he was
very generous with his spirit to fill in for us.”
Usher joined six other guys in the groom’s party — including Thicke’s 15-year-old son, Julian — at the May 30 wedding in Cabo San Lucas.
He was seen in photos wearing a dapper black suit with a black bow tie and dress shoes, matching Thicke. He also was seen clapping and smiling as Thicke’s 4-year-old son Luca, who served as ring bearer, carried the rings in a tiny case that said “Ring Security.”

At Monday’s event, the newlyweds also teased their upcoming honeymoon plans to PEOPLE, although Geary, 30, was a little in the dark about the details — for good reason.
“It’s actually a surprise,” Thicke reveals.
“I have no idea,” Geary chimes in. “He’s planning it.”

Thicke explains, “We’ve been doing this thing lately where she trusts me, she knows I’ll make sure it’s a lot of fun and something she’ll enjoy.”
The only clue that Geary has been given to guide her packing? “I tell her the weather. She’s allowed to know the weather,” Thicke says.
“It’s going to be warm, it’s going to be beach. That’s her favorite,” he adds. “And I could use a beach for seven days right now.”

As for when the couple plans to head off on their getaway, Thicke says they are postponing the honeymoon so they “get a little time at home, get the kids set up for summer school and stuff.” The musician shares son Julian with ex-wife Paula Patton, and he and Geary have welcomed three children together — Mia, 7, Lola, 6, and Luca.
While Thicke tells PEOPLE that not much has changed from the kids’ point of view now that he and Geary are married after a six-year engagement — “to them, it’s the same, old thing,” he says — they did have a blast taking part in the wedding celebrations.
“They had the best weekend of their lives, just like the two of us did,” the singer says.
And now that the wedding is done and dusted, Thicke and Geary have even more big plans ahead.
“We actually have a business we’re creating together, and then my new album will hopefully be coming out before the end of the year,” Thicke reveals, adding, “So it’s a year of celebration and fun.”
