Ana de Armas Considers Tom Cruise an ‘Incredible Mentor’ as They Approach Filming Thriller Deeper (Exclusive Source)

Tom Cruise and Ana de Armas are ready to finally collaborate.

The two actors “have a special work relationship,” a source tells PEOPLE, adding that de Armas has “prepped” all summer for their first project together.

“Tom is crazy hardworking and she’s very excited to work with him. She calls it an opportunity of a lifetime,” adds the insider of their upcoming Doug Liman-directed supernatural ocean thriller Deeper, sharing that the movie begins filming in August.

According to the source, de Armas, 37, is focused on work at the moment. The dynamic between the From the World of John Wick: Ballerina actress and Mission: Impossible — The Final Reckoning actor, 63, is “not romantic,” the source adds.

“Tom is an incredible mentor to Ana,” the insider tells PEOPLE. “She has nothing but amazing things to say about him.”

Reps for both actors didn’t immediately respond to PEOPLE’s request for comment.

Cruise and de Armas were most recently photographed together as they lounged on a yacht near Menorca, an island off the eastern coast of Spain. The duo were seen on separate couches aboard the boat, with both wearing sun hats and casual outfits.

When the actors were first spotted together in February, a source told PEOPLE that they were at dinner with their agents “discussing potential collaborations down the line” and noted that de Armas and Cruise “appeared to have no romantic connection, just friends.”

They were photographed together again several times over the following weeks, including as they left David Beckham’s 50th birthday party in London on May 3 and on a park walk in the U.K. capital on de Armas’ 37th birthday days earlier.

When de Armas spoke with Variety at the June premiere of her newest action flick Ballerina, she called Cruise’s recent public support for the film “unbelievable” and “amazing” when asked how it felt that the Top Gun icon was rooting for her success.

“But you know what, he supports every movie. He really wants the industry and cinema to go well and people going to the theaters,” she added. “We’re working together, so he got to see Ballerina and he actually really liked it. He loved the John Wicks.”

“It is very special that someone like him is supporting [Ballerina],” the Knives Out actress continued in her conversation with Variety. “It is really special in general to have other actors and people supporting each other. We can do well all together.”

Cruise opened up about his respect for de Armas during the New York City premiere of his new film Mission: Impossible — The Final Reckoning on May 18.

“(Ana is a) very, very talented, great dramatic actress, comedic, tremendous ability, learns quickly,” Cruise told Extra of de Armas.

He reiterated in comments to Access Hollywood, “Her ability is incredible. There’s an actress that has dramatic chops, someone who’s comedic, very, very talented.”

“You see her in Ballerina and you look at Keanu (Reeves) and her together … just a great actress,” Cruise added.
