The ‘Materialists’ actress reenacted how she fibs to her friends about their home design choices during a lie detector test with ‘Vanity Fair’

Dakota Johnson has a lot of opinions when it comes to home decor — but she’ll keep her thoughts to herself when it comes to her friends’ houses.
The Materialists actress, 35, laid all her design “hot takes” on the table while taking Vanity Fair’s lie detector test on Thursday, June 5, six years after she took her first one.
During the test, Johnson did not hold back when the interviewer asked, “Have you ever lied about liking a friend’s decor, when you really didn’t?”
“Yeah, you have to,” she answered, to which the outlet’s polygraph expert confirmed, “She’s being truthful.” The actress continued, “You can’t go in and be like, ‘Ugh, Leslie, what did you do?’ You have to go, ‘Ah, look what you did! Amazing.’ Like that.”
She was also asked to share her opinions on a few design trends, including whether she thinks accent walls are ever “a good look.”
“No,” she responded while shaking her head. “Never?” the interviewer asks again, to which she answers with a frown, “No.”
On whether she’s a fan of “karate-chopped pillows” — a way of styling decorative pillows with an indent in the middle — she says, “Sure, but like, why? You know?”
Johnson also added that open floor plans do deserve all the hype they get, and noted that she could be into matching furniture sets but it “depends on who made the set.”

The interviewer also referenced the actress’ serene Los Angeles home that was featured in Architectural Digest in 2020. Fans got a glimpse of her cozy abode, including her tranquil green kitchen that garnered a lot of attention.
“You gave Architectural Digest a tour of your home, and it has since gone viral. Were you surprised that your green kitchen became so popular?” the interviewer asked. “Yeah, sure was,” Johnson responded candidly.
“Would you consider yourself a trendsetter? Green kitchens are quite popular now,” the outlet added, to which the actress responded, “I don’t know if I would consider myself a trendsetter.”

Back when her home was featured in AD‘s cover story, Johnson revealed she purchased it with her first big paycheck from Fifty Shades of Grey after touring just one property. She starred in all three movies of the film franchise from 2015 to 2018 alongside Jamie Dornan.
“I was immediately drawn to how it was clean but also cozy,” she told AD of her home. “I thought, I’ll never want to sell this place.”
Comparing her home to a “treehouse,” Johnson added that the spot is a refreshing “anchor” for her after growing up with a “gypsy lifestyle” thanks to her famous actor parents, Melanie Griffith and Don Johnson.
“I thought it would be healthy to have a base,” she added. “With my job and the velocity at which my schedule can change, it’s important for me to have a place to go to and it be mine. Psychologically, I’m moored somewhere. This place is my anchor.”
