Julia Roberts and Andrew Garfield Are College Professors Facing Scandal in Tense After the Hunt Trailer

Julia Roberts is a woman experiencing a personal and professional scandal in her new movie.

On Wednesday, July 16, Amazon MGM Studios released a trailer for After the Hunt, from Challengers director Luca Guadagnino. The movie stars Roberts, 57, as a college professor who must navigate a serious accusation from a student named Maggie (played by Ayo Edebiri) against a professor at the college named Hank (Andrew Garfield).

As Amazon MGM Studios’ newly released trailer shows, Maggie approaches Roberts’ character to accuse Hank of assault, saying, “He crossed the line,” kicking off a tense atmosphere on the college’s campus as professors doubt the authenticity of Maggie’s story and Roberts’ character deals with a secretive past.

An official synopsis for the film describes After The Hunt as “a gripping psychological drama about a college professor (Julia Roberts) who finds herself at a personal and professional crossroads when a star student (Ayo Edebiri) levels an accusation against one of her colleagues (Andrew Garfield), and a dark secret from her own past threatens to come into the light.”

Written by actress and filmmaker Nora Garrett, After the Hunt explores the thorny potential of intergenerational conflict in the era of the #MeToo movement. The trailer opens with what appears to be a friendly debate among the college’s colleagues about the younger generation’s fear of “offending someone” before diving into the central conflict between Maggie and Hank.

At Amazon MGM Studios’ CinemaCon 2025 presentation in April, Guadagnino, Garfield and Edebiri took the stage at Caesar’s Palace and praised the Oscar winner’s “brilliant” work in the lead role.

“We love Luca Guadagnino from the bottom of our hearts as a man, as an artist, a radical artist,” added Garfield, 41. “He has a rare gift of exploring the complexity of what it is to be human, of all the emotions that we go through: desire, envy, betrayal and love.”

Edebiri, 29, said the movie is built to be seen “with other people, to talk about and discuss and just feel.”
